With long lineups at lunchtime, Jimmy’s enjoys a bit of a cult following thanks to its big shawarma sandwiches (available in three sizes with lamb, chicken or beef) and even bigger shawarma platters that come with rice, toasted pita and a choice of salad or dip (the garlicky Lebanese bean salad is always a good choice).
Jimmy’s is a little further from the University of Calgary than other eateries, but it’s well worth the trip (about a 30-minute walk from the middle of campus) for its gargantuan Mediterranean sandwiches. Calgarians love their donair, shawarma and falafel, and Jimmy’s consistently makes citywide best-of lists for value and flavour. Line-ups are common, but a part of the A & A experience.
Technically, Jimmy’s only offers takeout and delivery – though during the summer months you might be able to snag a chair outside – but it’s such a popular spot that it has to be included on this list. It’s no wonder why people love Jimmy’s – the portion sizes are generous, and it’s kind of fun watching your pita get put together at lightning speed before your eyes. If pitas aren’t your things, there is also a selection of salads, dips, samosas, olives and cheese that are just as delicious.
