When Jennifer Leblond opened a short-term artists’ co-op for the Christmas season of 1993, she had no idea that it would turn out to be the idea that would define her career. Steeling Home initially focused on creating hand-forged iron and steel – hence the name. It was a space for artists to explore their craft, be creative and sell their products to the public.
While some of the artists at Steeling Home moved on to new projects or careers, Jennifer continued to create, showcase and sell her metalwork. She also started bringing in other products to sell in the store. “I ended up just buying things that I liked – colourful, useful things,” says Jennifer. “We sell a lot of functional and decorative items. People often come to us for specific items.”
As a self-proclaimed modern-day general store, Steeling Home carries a ton of unique and vintage-inspired treasures. This 17th Avenue Southwest shop’s wares include novelty books, home decor items such as bowls and picture frames, artisanal jewellery and eclectic stationary items such as pens and notepads.
Dubbing itself a "modern general store," Steeling Home is an upscale boutique loaded with funky treasures and unusual items. The handcrafted jewellery selection is full of real gems. It boasts an array of artistic styles, from dazzling bejewelled earrings to rings set with ancient-looking coins and one-of-a-kind turquoise-studded cuffs, plus cufflinks and barrettes.
There’s always a passel of new and unique giftables at this 17th Avenue Southwest boutique. Secret Santas will find handcrafted jewellery including men’s cufflinks, attractively packaged bath products, handbags and scarves, and a book nook piled with stationary packages and stylishly whacky and often informative books.
