A national-level luge athlete, Gwyn Lewis got into boxing at Bowmont Boxing Club in 2004 and fell in love with the sport quickly. Now a board member of the club, he makes point-based, Olympic-style of boxing sound like an art form.
“People call boxing ‘the sweet science,’” he says. “You’re only ever fighting against yourself in the ring. People make it out to be about combat, but the reality is that you’re there with yourself. There’s nothing more honest than getting into a boxing ring.” He says that the sport has immensely helped his focus, mental fortitude, and his ability to relax. “The weirdest thing about boxing is that you’re going to get hit by another person,” he explains. “The one thing you have to do is relax. But every impulse in your body goes against that. It becomes a mind-over-matter thing.”
