An iconic Vancouver landmark, Bau-Xi Gallery is the oldest commercial art gallery in the city. Now housed in an airy, custom-designed space on Granville Street, the gallery celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. And its longstanding success is thanks in large part to founder and artist Paul Huang.
In 1965, Paul couldn’t find a Vancouver space to showcase his own artwork and collections from his peers, all contemporary artists. So he created one, with limited resources but a strong vision. Over decades of shrewd business decisions, his vision for contemporary art and its curation process has defined Bau-Xi as a centre for the arts. Today, the renowned gallery represents Canadian contemporary artists, with some international photography.
Gallery associate Kyle Besuschko is proud of the careers Bau-Xi has helped launch over the years, and the symbiotic relationships the gallery has with its artists, “We’re inspired by the artists we represent," he says. "Together we continue to push the boundaries of the visual arts."
Located on the cusp of Shaugnessy, this high-class gallery has white walls, lots of space, lots of quiet and lots of beauty. Bau-Xi is the oldest contemporary art gallery in Vancouver; it was opened in 1965 to fill the need for a showcase of Canadian painters on the West Coast. Walking among the landscapes, abstract works and large-print photos, you can hear muffled coughs, the squeak of shoes, and other pin-drop sounds that speak to the rapt silence of art appreciation.
Before even stepping into South Granville’s Bau-Xi, you’re treated to the serene scene you’ll likely face on the inside. A horseshoe of windows envelops you and you’re face to face with a sampling of the current artist’s work, displayed simply on white walls and removed from the busy street. Vancouver’s oldest contemporary gallery, Bau-Xi has been representing emerging and established Canadian artists since 1965. From Canadian legend Ken Lochhead to West Van’s lovely Bobbie Burgers, expect a rejuvenating and thoughtful stroll through this pristine space.
As Vancouver’s oldest contemporary gallery, Bau-Xi (pronounced “bo-she”) has been representing and showcasing West Coast artists for decades, yet maintains a current and up-to-date feel. Their exhibitions cover all media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Take a look around and don’t be afraid to make a purchase.
