CrossFit is about doing a workout that equips you for real life. Its programming using constantly varied, functional movements
performed at a high intensity.
Functional movements are the movements of our everyday lives. If you’re holding a grocery bag and bend down to pick up another one, that’s a weighted squat. If you pick a box up off the ground and put it on a high shelf, that’s a power clean and press. And if you lean over and pick up a small child, you’re doing a deadlift.
You won’t find functional movements in a traditional fitness club. While the muscles contract and perform, the pattern of movement forced by gym machines isn’t natural. You might get stronger but in patterns of movement you will rarely use. Gym workouts are not constantly varied either; you do the same thing over and over for weeks or even months. Routine is the enemy: your body cannot be ready for the unexpected this way!
