Yummy! We've been here a couple times and it's very good food and good portion sizes. The service has been prompt and friendly. Good value for money and we'll definitely return. The chef has some great specials that are inventive and different. Very enjoyable!
After reading some negative comments on this site, I almost passed up a really nice evening in downtown Hallifax. Our server was friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was sort of downhome relaxed and the food was excellent. Is this is the best meal I've ever had? No, but the lobster would be hard to beat anywhere, the mussels were fresh and well prepared. And the server, who not only spent time visitng with us about the city, she made sure a couple at a nearby table - celebrating their anniversary - had a special evening. I live in Atlanta, GA - so, obviously, I don't spend a lot of time in Hallifax. But I will visit this restaurant again next time I'm there.
Visited this restaurant on Saturday, Aug 17, 2008. The host was rude - not even a single smile, had to guess our table was ready when she left to put menus on but didn't tell us to follow. Waitress seemed more concerned with wandering about than actually waiting on us. Food did not live up to the restaurant's name. Have had better fish at local fish & chip dives than what was served, and payed almost double the price. Would not eat there again.

The subtle flavours of the crab bisque – not too fishy, not overly creamy – are representative of the wider menu at McKelvie's; there's a sense of skill and restraint here. It's evident, for example, in the tempura fish tacos, which have just enough batter and just enough spice. Located in an attractive historic building near the harbour, McKelvie's arched windows let in plenty of light, giving the dining room, with its inviting booths, a bright, contemporary feel.

The selection of oysters varies here, broadening in the busy summer season and narrowing down to a locally-grown Northern Novas in the cold months. The big draw here is Oyster Fridays, when you can enjoy all-day oysters at a Happy Hour price. The varied menu of other seafood options makes McKelvie's a good place to bring squeamish friends who can't enjoy a raw oyster.

A toasted top-split bun cradles a lobster salad dressed with fresh dill mayo and lemon zest. At $19.99, this is one of the most expensive lobster rolls in town. You may as well upgrade your side to seafood chowder or lobster poutine, since you’re already splurging.
