Meet the owner

Unless you work in the tech industry, you might not know that the words “functional” and “imperative” refer to computer software programming languages. However, the moniker of Toronto web and app development business Functional Imperative wasn’t born of such an obvious connection. When it came time for founder Josh Borts and his partner Khurrum Virani to pick a company name, the duo compiled a list of 20 “nerdy words,” put them on a wall and arbitrarily threw darts at them. The darts just so happened to land on two words that correlated nicely and thus, Functional Imperative was born.

Offering a fun and upbeat approach to web development, Josh and his team of coders pride themselves on not just building websites, but improving businesses. “We focus on the business and not just the technology. All of our staff have different backgrounds and that drives who we are,” he notes. These varied backgrounds contribute to the creative, out-of-the-box thinking that Functional Imperative offers its clients.
