Great Atmosphere & Service - Food continues to be...meh...

We went for dinner recently as we live in the area and love the Wooly for its atmosphere, choice of beers on tap etc....I just really wish that the food was better..as I remain quite surprised at the overall 'averageness' of the entrees here. Yes, they use locally grown, organic ingredients...I get and support that..but the portion size and flavour leave me unimpressed. Service is always great...and the beer is plentiful and cold...but I think I'll just start going there for beers and maybe fries (which can be hit and miss)...there are just much better places close by (IMO) to get a better pub meal. I will say that of our three meals...mine was the best..a traditional chicken burger with salad..the house dressing was nice. Based on our experience I would not recommend the Cobb salad (very small portion and was drenched in ranch dressing) or the chicken tenders which were just average.

Lunch on the front porch on a beautiful day. Although we weren't beer drinkers, I can see the attraction as they had a board listing all the different brands they carry. Our server was attentive. Good sense of humour, refilled our glasses promptly. Food was excellent. Hot and plentiful. Fresh, homemade fries. Not those frozen, coated ones that everybody seems to be using.

Best Pub Grub In The City

This is the best pub in the city to eat at, The food is local organic grown, and they have a nice selection of local beers on tap. I have yet to find a pub with better Shepherd's pie! Get there early on a weekend the places is fills up fast!

A Great Public House

I've been going to the "Wooly" for years and it is a great little pub. The food is always reliably good and there are all kinds of great microbrews on tap. It can get stuffy on a humid evening but that somehow adds to the charm. I always hit the Wooly whenever I return to Guelph and next time you are looking for a fun pub experience you should too!

Pretty good

I've been to the woolly several times, and while it does have a terrific selection of good beers you can't often find other places, the food can be hit or miss. On one occasion, my friend ordered the bison chili, and it wasn't hot when it arrived - it had clearly been sitting for a while before it was served. I've also had terrific appetizers, and the specials can be quite delicious, especially a pesto pasta I had once.

it's ok

This place is ok. Thier staff need a kick to see you a little more often and it's not that big. They sell all this organic stuff and local which is good. Food is good, and they usually feature a local beer which is nice. They also sell flights of beer which is great. Only person in town to do so I believe. Would return but not top of the list

I was so excited to read the menu listed on their website, when we arrived we found it was not up to date. We had 2 servers, 1 for beer, 1 for food and we were unsure whom to ask for what! The chicken sandwich and buffalo burger took over 40 minutes to reach our table. The chicken was so dry I could hardly bite through it and the burger was dwarfed by the bun. I wrote to the owners about the poor experience and after 6 weeks, they have yet to respond. I will never go back and do not recommend this place to anyone.

We had stopped going to the Wooly as we had been turned off by the quality of food and increased negative/snarky attitude of the waitstaff. However, we tried again as we live close by and I just used to love this place!! We were pleasantly surprised. The food was quite good. My only small complaint is that the side order of fries was a little bit small..and they have really good fried. Other than that, our waitress was extremely pleasant and competent. The beer, which we had never had a problem with, was served promptly and ice cold. Maybe management took a look at this site and made some changes. Anyway, we will go back !!

wow, what snobby service!

waited a long time for the food, the beer came quick. Loved the taste of all the ontario beers, but the fish 'n chips were very small portions. I thought I would still be hungry after eating it but because I was well past starving, I guess my stomach shrunk and thankfully I didn't go to bed hungry. My server was cocky and arrogant. I was thinking of applying for a wait staff position here, but no thank you. They all seemed cliquish and some actually seemed unhappy. I did LOVE the bartender though! He was witty and all out just nice! Sad. I was looking forward to their new restaurant and maybe even applying for it, but with the staff attitudes, I wouldn't want to work there and that is enough to keep me away for dinner.

Don't bother to order the portabello fries

I was very disappointed we went for lunch with kids and had to wait behind a group of 30 even though we were there before them. Shepherd's pie was a joke and my salmon burger was "blackened" although not intentionally. Not even some bread or chips for the kids while we waited. Went with friends the other night - they were also not pleased. The french fries were not cooked and the portabello fries - to the person who saifd they were out twice- don't bother. This place does a great job of always being in the local news, philanthropy at the expense of good food and service. No thank you

Eek! Sure it's a pub, but with the local paper coverage, about the place being the spot for local food, we were disgusted. The server, well lets just say she needed a day off or something to consider if this is the right thing for her. The veg burger was right out of the freezer, and the fries were tasteless, the bison well done beyond all belief, and the mashed potatoes tasted as though they were out of a box. On the bright side the beer was great, this place is great for a drink, but not much else. What's with the chefs walking about the restaurant covered in food!!!! Service needs some serious work.

No atmosphere in this pub. A lot more could be done with the decor. Food reasonable. Service terrible. Waitress miserable, did not come back to ask us how things were. Would probably not visit again. Penny whistle much more atmosphere, better service.

We came to the pub on Saturday night for a burger, but the three of us ended up ordering steaks because of the special the pub offers on the weekend ($20 for the house beer and steak..wow!). Who thinks to go to a pub for a steak and a good steak at that. What a pleasant treat. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the house beer tasted great. The bill took a while to get to the table, but we were deep in conversation so maybe the server was just giving us privacy. I love this place. The staff all seem to enjoy being there which is a nice change compared to most other places. Thanks.

Out of the three times I've been to the wooly, they've been out of portobello fingers twice. Last night I settled for a not too great veggie burger (couldn't taste guacamole or mushrooms, there wasn't enough). I think in future I'll check on the fingers before ordering a drink.

I have to say first off that the food was incredible. Wasn't overly impressed with the service though. Not once did the waitress come back to check how everything was, or ask if we needed anything. She didn't introduce herself, and when I asked her what the specials were she told me to look at the board. People were sitting in front of the board and the writing was way to small for me to even see what they were...so I didn't even bother. The bottled beer definately wasn't cold enough and tasted like it had been in there for a while. I might go back..and maybe request to have Greg serve us...seeing as I know I would get proper service from him.

Good food and service. If there were a misc. column I would give it a 2....because... - excellent beer selection, but wasn't cold enough (warm beer = bad) - strange bathroom situation, for a large enough pub, there's one urinal in the men's room (strange) So I guess my complaints are mostly due to the old building, probably wasn't originally a pub, likely a private home. Sometimes newer pubs, built to be pubs, lack in character, but make up for in proper seating and normal restrooms. Anyway, not a bad pub, but the old building is not a great fit. Good food and large portions, good service, good drink selection.

The place is in a great older building. Could use some more pubish chairs and tables to make it more cosy. Waitress was very attentive and we had good service. Food was tasty and would definately go back. Ohh the bathrooms are an adventure!

What an awesome pub! So impressed with their beer menu and the selection of their food menu. We were a bit of 'high needs' customers, deciding to change tables after ordering our meal. The waitresses were so accomidating and kind. We are relatively new to Guelph and were so happy we came across this gem. Infact, we're on the way out the door there now :)
