This place has been in steady decline over the years. The food has gone from mediocre to really, really bad. It's in a fantastic location in a beautiful building right smack in the middle of the tourist zone, so it won't go out of business. But it should. The last time I went here my out-of-town guests insisted we go there, and I hadn't been in a couple of years, so I obliged and we were all completely embarrassed by the bad food (small portions of cold, dry and cheap mass-produced frozen chain food) and the slow service. It's a beautiful place, I'm hoping someday a new business will move in here.
Best place in town if looking for a good cheap meal. Service is a bit slow but they always seem to be busy. Bangers and mash is my favourite
I've eaten at the Tir Nan Og a number of times, over a decade or so. It's part of a chain owned by Guiness. It used to be a lot better in terms of food quality, but has been trending downward. I was downtown looking for lunch one day last summer, and decided on (the very nice) patio at the Tir Nan Og. It was busy, so service was slow, but understandably so. Two women behind me had their meal comped by the manager because they had waited upwards of an hour for their food. I ordered a chicken caesar salad, not the most exciting choice, but something you could reasonably expect a busy kitchen not to screw up. How do you screw up a chicken caesar? Don't cook the bacon bits! As I'm eating the salad I bite into a square of raw, room-temp bacon. I called the waitress over and sent it back, she apologized, and returned with the same, now picked-over, salad and some cooked bacon on top. Next time (if there is a next time) I'll stick with the burger. Surely you can't screw -that- up.
I thought that this place was bad a year ago, but believe it or not, it's gotten even worse! The chicken was so horribly dry that it was inedible. Even though my order was completely wrong, they didn't offer to do anything to fix it. To top it off, this meal was extremely over priced. There are so many amazing places to eat in Kingston, so don't even bother wasting your time or money here.
My dinner was Cold when we got it ... My friends dinner had to be returned twice because it was so Dry i was very dissapointed with this dinner we went in at 9:00pm and didnt actully get our Dinner till 11:00 by the time we were done everything it was 12:30 it was a Sad Sad Evening and we will not be returning again
First we went to another restaurant, but were told there was a one and a half hour wait. We went to the Nog and, even though it was crazy, they found us a table right away. Everyone enjoyed their food and the server, although extremely busy, checked on us regulatly. I was told the chicken pie was fabulous and really enjoyed the ribs! It was very loud with a couple of big parties, but we didn't mind.
While I agree with some of the other posters regarding the state of the building itself, I have eaten here many times and have never had bad food. Overpriced? Slightly. Stick to their snacks. The Blarney chips are great! If you like fries and nachos, then these are for you. Also great are their wings (I usually won't eat restaurant wings) and the deep-fried calamari and shrimp. Rolling Rock dipping sauce rocks!! Oh and by the way, Josh, Strongbow is NOT beer, it's cider.
This restaurant is falling to pieces. The service was bad. I waited for what felt like hours for a table to get cleaned, my glass for my beer has lipstick marks on it and my food took so long to come it it was dry and the meat mixture seemed crispy and burnt(dried out). I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. When I asked to speak with the General manager the staff member told me that he was out of town and will not be returning for a few months. Who runs a restaurant from out of town.
This restaurant was a waste of time and money. My soup was so water based and there was no onions. My ice cream was full of ice crystals and very nasty! I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a good evening out.
The food was alright, fries were cold, my lamb burger seemed overcooked(gross soggy peppers on top was not wanted, but came anyways), my beer was good. The talk from the servers about mice in the kitchen was not a pleasant topic to listen about. Tir Nan Og is a dirty restaurant, the bathrooms were just dirty, no paper towel, no soap, the floors were mopped with dirty water, the restaurant floors were falling apart, and the hardwood had lifted in many spots.
Although there were tiles missing from the floor and it was a little too dark for my liking, the food was amazing, definitely not what I would've expected from a Pub. The server was lovely and accommodating, very nice, I think her name was Claudine...great personality. I'll definitely be going there again the next time I'm in Kingston!!!
Have gone a couple of times with my daughter and really enjoyed the food & atmosphere. Staff always friendly and accomodating. Look forward to visiting again when in Kingston.
