While most people think of pottery as a way to make mugs, teapots, plates and other assorted items, the craft has brought The Pottery founder Paul Stewart a lifetime of stories, experiences and fun facts. “I’ve worked on all sorts of projects,” he says of his work. “Lots of films and TV shows. They like using raw clay for shattering effects so it’s safe to walk on after the shot, so I get calls for clay that looks like it’s been in the kiln but actually hasn’t.” Since the 1980s, Paul has been collecting all kinds of knowledge about pottery and the world around him, something he brings to every class, workshop and lesson at his studio.
But Paul’s journey with pottery started long before making props for movies or running his own studio. It actually started with his dad. “My father got into pottery when I was about 12 years old,” Paul recalls, “so I grew up sort of exposed to the whole thing.” After university, he travelled to Europe before coming home and eventually opening The Pottery in 1985, offering classes for kids, adults and schools.
