Before buying the Richard butcher's shop on rue Robert à St-Basile-le-Grand, Sylvain Lapointe's passion for communications led him to the city council of Marieville, Montérégie, where he was Mayor from 1993 to 2002. Before becoming a mayor, he was the political staffer to Yvon Lafrance, provincial constituency member for Iberville.

At 40, Sylvain – stunned by the political carousel, with his epicurean talents and a love for cooking – took butcher's training at the Patriotes à Ste-Julie Vocational Training Centre. Freshly graduated, he met the owner who hired him as a butcher, and in August 2006, Sylvain became the owner of Boucherie La Pointe Gourmande.
