Korean restaurants have been popping up like crazy in our city, giving us plenty of choice to sample delectable dishes like kimchi, bibimbap and more. If Korean food is new to you here’s a list of hotspots that will provide a delicious introduction. Wherever you go, we’re sure you’ll love the side dishes – cucumber pickles, tofu, bean sprouts, cold potatoes or kimchi (of course!) that come with every meal.
Atti is smack in the middle of downtown, a rare spot for good Korean fare. It caters more to the business clientèle. This restaurant was my introduction to a favourite dish called Japchae, a stir-fry of glass noodles (made from the starch of a white sweet potato), thinly slices of beef, and various vegetables.
Probably one of the most authentic Korean addresses in town, not many people know about it due to its odd St-Jacques location. They have a long and exotic menu here so take the opportunity to try something different. For the adventurous, try the Gopchang jeongol, a spicy Korean stew consisting of boiled beef tripe and vegetables in a beef broth.
Fried chicken is making a comeback in Montreal, and lucky for us it just so happens that Korean fried chicken is the fast food of choice in Korea. DaWa makes it a specialty, offering classic simple fried chicken as well as fun variations like a General Tao version.
Located in the heart of Westmount, this place has been around for quite some time. The go-to dish here is Dolsot Bibimpap. Served in a heated stone bowl, this dish consists of steamed white rice topped with vegetables, beef, and a raw egg, which is cooked against the sides of the bowl.
This is one of those places you would walk right by – just another semi-basement Chinatown spot. But the inside is warm with wooden walls and a smiling staff. The bulgogi is a hit here: grilled thinly sliced sirloin that is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, black pepper, garlic, onions, ginger, and sugar.
This small family run Korean spot is a local favourite with a very friendly staff. All the Korean classics can be found here, like Galbi (marinated beef short ribs), plus a few unknown dishes like Samgyeopsal (thick pork belly slices served with lettuce to make a wrap).
