When you think of late-night eats, you think of different staples depending on where you are roaming (or drinking) in the city. But instead of the usual pizza, noodles, or poutine, why not try something a little more gourmet? These spots meet our exceptionally high standards for delicious food that is more than just greasy fuel for your belly.
Le Chien Fumant has a charcuterie platter that is to die for, and their meats are all cured in-house. Located in the Plateau, they have a chalkboard menu that changes frequently. You can find interesting dishes like tripe for adventurous foodies or some of their classics like their Chinatown calamari, tossed in a sweet and sour Asian sauce. Le Chien Fumant’s kitchen is open until 2 am from Tuesday to Sunday.
Imadake is a Japanese izakaya located in downtown Montreal. Our favourite dishes include their deep-fried chicken skin, their fried goat cheese, and their takoyaki (octopus balls). We’re also staunch supporters of Imadake’s sake bombs! Their bar is open until 3 am but their kitchen is open until 1 am on Friday and Saturday, although some dishes like their ramen are only available until around 11:30 pm.
L’Express is a Montreal institution and classic Parisian bistro. Their steak tartare is to die for, their croque monsieur is perfect and they have a dessert menu that will have you swooning. Their homemade ravioli in a mushroom sauce is exquisite and their hanger steak with shallot butter is a classic! The kitchen is open from Monday to Saturday until 2 am and on Sunday until 1 am. When the Divas think of gourmet late night eats, we think of L’Express!
Big in Japan is truly committed to late-night eats! Their kitchen is open until 3 am every day of the week. It’s the perfect spot if you’re feeling peckish and you’re roaming about the Plateau at odd hours of the night. We adore their steamed BBQ pork buns and we would kill for their okonomiyaki, a pork pancake topped with a shrimp salad. Another house specialty is their tuna tataki, which is served with a refreshing tomato, feta and caper salad.
We always had a lot love for L’Orignal in Old Montreal but when they introduced their late-night menu, we rejoiced. The kitchen is open until 2:30 am on Friday and Saturday with an ever changing late-night menu after midnight. Some of their classics include a gourmet poutine and grilled cheese. We hope that you get to try L’Orignal’s maple sriracha chicken wings, and of course, you can have cocktails all night long!
Buvette Chez Simone is a wine bar with the perfect accompanying dishes like cheese, charcuterie and other small plates for sharing. Try their mushroom vol-au-vent for a real treat! They are located on Parc Ave. in Outremont, and they’re always busy, especially when their terrace opens in the summer. Buvette Chez Simone’s kitchen closes at 1 am from Thursday to Saturday with a reduced menu available after midnight.
Pizza is pretty synonymous with late-night eats in Montreal. But what if you could have really good Italian pizza instead of some of the junky pizza that’s out there? If you’re in Old Montreal, head to Bevo Bar + Pizzeria, for tons of different pizzas like their Bosco Pizza with roasted mushrooms and sliced truffles, or their Nutella Pizza for dessert. With a late-night menu available after midnight, Bevo Bar + Pizzeria has a stocked bar with a DJ and wood-fired pizza until 2 am from Thursday to Saturday.
If you’re craving something different, try Icehouse, a tex-mex restaurant in the Plateau. Their crab nachos are the best nachos in the city, the deep-fried chicken taco is sinfully good and the dirty steak burrito makes us swoon. Wash it all down with their bourbon lemonade and you’ll fall in love with this cozy restaurant. Icehouse is open until 1:30 am on Friday and Saturday. They don’t take reservations but if you go fairly late you’re sure to get a table!
Schwartz’s is a Montreal institution, and smoked meat is gourmet to Montrealers. Located on Saint-Laurent Boul, this deli specializes in smoked meat and serves up some of the city’s best. Whether you’re getting a sandwich or plate, you have to enjoy your smoked meat with a sour pickle, cherry cola and fries. Patrons line up just to get a coveted seat in this small establishment. Schwartz’s is open until 12:30 am from Sunday to Thursday, until 1:30 am on Friday, and until 2:30 am on Saturday.
