In England, the pub, or public house, is a place where communities unite and have a few laughs over a good pint. Whether you’re in the mood to kick back and have a Guinness with friends, or you’re craving a good-sized serving of fish and chips, these best of the British Pubs in Montreal have got you covered.
Anyone in the Mile-End looking for a unique English pub experience should pull up a chair at Bishop & Bagg. The pub is owned and operated by the same partners who brought us the successful Burgundy Lion Pub on Notre-Dame. Along with the standard British pub fare, they offer a wide variety of gins, quality cocktails and English spirits. It’s a trendy cocktail bar with a casual pub feel.
Located on Marquette, this resto/pub is brought to us by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver (but don’t expect to find him in the kitchen, that’s chef Derek Dammann’s space). Maison Publique, which is French for public house, or simply pub, will bring you British inspired dishes that will make your mouth water. They don’t have a set menu, so expect something different every time you go.
For a casual pint of Guinness with friends, head west to Ye Olde Orchard Pub on Monkland in NDG. This unpretentious Celtic pub is a guaranteed good time, and has been serving good brew since 1996. They have a wide selection of beers on tap as well as the standard English pub fare. If you can’t get to NDG, try their other locations on Prince Arthur, de la Montagne and on Lakeshore in Pointe-Claire Village.
If you’ve been craving a good portion of “chippy,” then take a trip to Brit & Chips on McGill Street. They offer various kinds of fish with different kinds of batter. While the Brits have this dish down pat, there’s a little bit of Montreal in every bite. This joint closes at 11pm on weekends, so head on over to one of the many bars in the area to keep the party going.
