How to save money while breast or bottle feeding

July 28, 2015

Whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed, there's all kinds of expensive equipment that claims to make life easier. But sticking to the old ways is often the simplest (and cheapest) solution.

How to save money while breast or bottle feeding

Free food

  • If you can, breastfeed your baby. Breast milk is free, convenient and has many health and emotional benefits for you and your baby.
  • As a minimum, you'll need two nursing bras and breast pads (washable ones are more economical than disposables).
  • Wear loose T-shirts or blouses, and invest in a (second-hand) breast pump if you're returning to work or you want your partner to share feeding with you.
  • Don't be lured into spending unnecessarily.

The money-saving formula

  • Formula can cost upwards $1,200 to $1,600 a year, so keep an eye out for savings in pharmacies and supermarkets and stock up when you can.
  • Your baby will need formula for most of the first year. Talk to friends and neighbours who have gone through the experience. Learn what to expect and you'll be better prepared.

Hitting the bottle

  • Dishwashers and microwaves won't cut it when sterilizing. The water temperature in a dishwasher is not always high enough to kill bacteria, while the microwave heats unevenly.
  • To properly sterilize, wash bottles and nipples in hot, soapy water and rinse well. Then place the feeding equipment in a large pot with a lid. Cover everything with water and boil for at least five minutes.
  • Electric steam sterilizers are more expensive, but they may be worthwhile if you're bottle feeding. If you feel the time-saving benefit they offer is worth the extra expense, shop around for the best deal before your baby is born.
  • Keep an eye out for promotional packs that include free extras, such as bottles and nipples.

A back-to-basics approach to breastfeeding and bottle-feeding isn't old fashioned, it's time-tested and mother-approved. By skipping the fancy gadgets, you can keep your baby happy and well-fed, all while saving a little money.
