Some of the best gardening tools may be the ones you already have, but don't know are useful in the garden! Here are a few small tools every gardener needs.

Small tools every gardener needs

Table fork

A table fork is great for pulling weeds that have sprung up close to the base of small flowers and vegetables. Slip it under the weed's crown and twist, and the weed should come right out.

Steak knife

A blade sharp enough to cut through a tough steak can be put to good use in the garden. A serrated steak knife is perfect for getting beneath taprooted weeds, such as dandelions. You can also use it to cut through the large roots of perennials such as hostas and daylilies when digging them up and dividing them.

Ice pick

An ice pick does a wonderful job of opening clogged drainage holes in containers, or you can use it to punch holes in an old piece of hose, turning it into a homemade drip irrigation line.

Serving spoon

A large serving spoon is useful for digging small seedlings that pop up in the wrong place and need to be moved. If you lift the seedlings from beneath, keeping the soil around their roots intact, they'll quickly become accustomed to their new location.
