This little Whyte Avenue Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem. The food is tasty, but don’t overlook the sake menu. It’s short and sweet, with seven kinds of sake served. Choose between Gekkeikan sake (available in several sizes), served hot or cold, Hakutsuru Junmai Sake (720 ml) or Oni Koroshi Demon Killer (720 ml) for groups. If you’re indulging by yourself, the 200 ml bottle of Pearl Momokawa or the 300 ml bottles of Hakutsuru Jumai Ginjo or Sayuri Nigori Sake will do the trick. There’s also Hakutsuru Draft Sake available in 300 ml.
This long-time staple of Whyte Avenue dining offers classic Japanese cuisine, including outstanding sushi. They offer delivery online, so you can get your fix of tuna sashimi and California rolls in the evening without stepping foot outdoors. Their maki rolls are quite creative, with delightful treats such as the deep-fried yam maki. Plus, their special rolls list is longer than your right arm, so there is plenty to choose from.
While the menu at this Whyte Avenue treasure is extensive, don’t be tempted by all the soups, salads and entrees. Go straight for the sushi and sashimi. It’s so delish and fresh — everything from the yellowtail to the salmon to the tuna belly is first class. They also serve several kinds of maki, including a deep fried yam and seaweed roll that is very popular. The list of special rolls is crazy long, so you’ll never want for choice.
