When Natalie Rivas’s brother Paul asked if she would help him open Bodega on Main in 2015, the banker and former hostess – who swore she’d never work in a restaurant again – said “yes.”
“I had worked in my father’s restaurant, La Bodega, all through university, but when I graduated, I was adamant that I was done with this business,” she says. What made her change her mind? “I took time off work in 2011 due to a bad bout with breast cancer,” Natalie explains. “I just decided after that, that I needed to do something different, and that’s about the time when Paul asked me to come on board,” she continues.
Today Natalie and Paul are partners in Bodega on Main, an eclectic Spanish tapas restaurant in Vancouver’s Chinatown, where Natalie has lived for more than 20 years. With Natalie running the business side of things, and Paul overseeing general operations, the pair are a well-matched team. “We balance each other out,” Natalie says. “I never thought I’d work with my brother, but I love it,” she continues.
This new venture from the Rivas family picks up where La Bodega left off when the beloved Spanish tapas spot closed in 2014. La Bodega’s legacy lives on in some of the artwork and the familiar handmade stools at the bar, but this bright and modern room gives Bodega on Main its own personality. For a visual showstopper, order the paella negra with squid ink rice.
Take your taste buds on a culinary adventure at this modern Spanish bodega situated on the outskirts of Chinatown. In-the-know foodies pack inside the 75-seat dining room on a nightly basis to feast on a creative selection of tapas-style plates. Eat your way through the menu of bar snacks, artisanal cheeses and cured meats, hot and cold seafood tapas, meaty entrees, and two different types of paella: try the traditional paella mixta with saffron rice, seafood, chicken, chorizo and pork or opt for the paella negra made with squid ink rice, prawns, calamari, baby squid, mussels, clams and cuttlefish.
