Delicious food, great service!!

This was my first time at Genji, first time at a Japanese restaurant. The service was prompt and polite. We ordered drinks first and then our meal. Most meals came with miso soup and salad. Everything was delicious. The teriyaki (both of them) looked exactly like the pictures on the menu! The meat was tender, the vegetable properly cooked (not too hard, not too soft) and the rice was sticky, perfect for eating with chopsticks. All in all, a wonderful dining experience!

Great Place!

Food here is always fantastic. I love the decor and the fact that its tucked away out of the busy street. My food always looks too good to eat! Great place.

The best Bento box we ever tried

We went to Genji for lunch all the times and our experience was completely different than the one below. We have tried their Bento Box, which includes choice of teriyaki (I ordered beef teriyaki and my colleage ordered chicken teriyaki) with stir fried vegetables, Kani Cream Croquette breaded mash potatoes with crab, 2 pan-fried beef Gyoza. Both of us think that it was a good deal for $16. The Gyoza that we tried were pan-fried. I don't think they were deep-fried. We also tried their dinner menu. They have the best sushi and sashimi in Ottawa. Go try it and you will thank me for my recommendation.

Tried out this restaurant, only to be disappointed.

I went for a late lunch around 2PM for lunch. There was no one in the restaurant upon entry, and I waited for 5 minutes till a server came to seat me. Greeted with no smile or a simple "Hi". The interior was well done, and I was fascinated by the touch of high tech ordering machines they had at the entrance and at the cash register. I ordered the bento box with a glass of water. The lunch came with a soup and salad, which both tasted mediocre. The salad also had wilted and blackened pieces of lettuce, the soup tasted watery and sandy at the bottom of the bowl. When the bento came out, it was placed in front of me as if they did something wrong to them. The meal had teriyaki chicken with two deep fried gyoza, two pieces of crab korokke and rice. The rice was on the dried-out side, as if it was reheated in the microwave. When I tried out the chicken, it did not taste like teriyaki sauce. It took me a few extra bites to figure out that the sauce it was Peking duck sauce. :P The gyoza was another downer, since both pieces were deep-fried, not pan-fried, and drowned in some kind of ponzu sauce. The only thing that tasted good was the korokke that looked as if it was frozen food from the local supermarket. The sauce for the korokke did not match the flavor for the meal. At the end of all things, I found this to be another disappointing Japanese restaurant that I wasted $20 on. I don't think I would even bother going back to try the sushi or sashimi. If cooks or owners want to hold a successful Japanese restaurant, then learn from the masters in Japan or at least get some proper tips from those who know what it is suppose to be/taste like.

A bento box of satisfying sushi restaurants in Ottawa

A bento box of satisfying sushi restaurants in Ottawa

A downtown destination for Japanese fusion cuisine, with bright blonde décor and a modern take on traditional shoji screens, Genji offers both teriyaki and tempura dishes, along with sushi. The seaweed salad, dressed with sesame dressing, makes a nice starter. Nigiri options include flying fish roe and cuttlefish. Various unusual fruit maki are available at dinner.
